From Grief to Floristry: My Journey to Bespoke Blooms
Share
Floristry wasn’t part of my plan. In fact, it found me during one of the hardest times of my life. When my wonderful mother-in-law passed away, I wanted to do something personal for her farewell. She adored flowers, and I felt that creating a tribute would be a way to honour her life and show my love one last time.
I spent days learning, planning, and carefully placing every bloom into the arrangement. It wasn’t just about flowers – it was about emotion. Every petal carried meaning, every stem carried memory. When the tribute was complete, and the funeral directors commented on how beautiful and heartfelt it was, they gently suggested that I consider floristry as more than a one-off gesture.
That moment changed everything.
Healing Through Flowers
Grief has a way of reshaping you. For me, floristry became a form of therapy – a way to channel pain into beauty, and sadness into something meaningful. With every arrangement I made, I discovered not only a new skill but a new part of myself.
Alongside my floral journey, I’ve continued my work as a community nurse, which has taught me the importance of compassion, gentleness, and listening. Nursing has shaped me just as much as floristry has, and together they’ve given me a deep understanding of how to care for people in their most significant moments – whether through health, kindness, or flowers.
I went on to train with Glasgow Clyde College and the incredible Kay’s Flower School, completing Levels 1 and 2 in commercial floristry. In 2024, I was honoured to be named Runner-Up Newcomer Florist of the Year – recognition that filled me with pride and confirmed that I’d found my true calling.
Why Bespoke Blooms?
From the very beginning, I knew I wanted my flowers to be more than just decorations. For me, it’s about how flowers make people feel – whether that’s joy at a wedding, comfort at a funeral, or pride at a workshop where someone creates something with their own hands.
Every arrangement I create is bespoke. I don’t mass produce or follow a template. I take time to listen, to understand, and to design flowers that tell a story – your story. Families often tell me they can see my heart in the flowers I create, and I think that’s the greatest compliment I could ever receive.
Floristry with Heart, Rooted in Ayrshire
Although I spent 20 years travelling the world as an air hostess, my heart has always been here in Ayrshire. This community has supported me every step of the way, and I’m proud to give back through my work – whether that’s creating bespoke wedding flowers for couples at stunning venues like Trump Turnberry, Glenapp Castle, and Kilochan Castle, or designing heartfelt funeral tributes for local families.
I also run seasonal workshops, like my much-loved Christmas wreath making evenings, where people come together not just to create, but to connect. These workshops are about more than flowers – they’re about community, kindness, and joy.
A Light That Grew from Darkness
Bespoke Blooms Floristry was born from grief, but it has grown into love, creativity, and community. Flowers have become my way of honouring life’s biggest moments – from joyful weddings to tender farewells – and I pour my heart into every creation.
To me, floristry is more than flowers. It’s storytelling, it’s therapy, it’s connection. It’s the light that bloomed for me in the darkest of times, and I’m honoured to share that light with every client I meet.
✨ Bespoke. Heartfelt. Luxurious. That is, and always will be, the heart of Bespoke Blooms Floristry.
